Movers Hounslow Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Movers Hounslow manages health, safety and welfare for employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals, packing, loading, transport and storage activities. Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by maintaining safe systems of work and promoting a positive safety culture throughout the company.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
Movers Hounslow is committed to conducting all removal and relocation work in a manner that protects people, property and the environment. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and accepted industry best practice. Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety, and expects all employees and contractors to cooperate in implementing this policy.
We recognise that safe working is an integral part of providing a reliable, professional removals service. Health and safety considerations will never be compromised for speed or convenience, and we will always seek to plan our work so that risks are controlled as far as is reasonably practicable.
Roles and Responsibilities
Senior management is responsible for establishing, reviewing and maintaining this policy, providing adequate resources for its implementation and setting clear health and safety objectives for the business. They will ensure that suitable procedures, training and equipment are in place to support safe working practices.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day implementation of the policy on site and in vehicles. They must carry out or follow risk assessments, brief their teams on safe methods of work, check the condition of equipment and vehicles, and monitor compliance with safety procedures.
All employees and contractors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. This includes following training and instructions, using equipment correctly, reporting hazards, incidents or near misses, and refusing to carry out any task that they believe to be unsafe until it has been reviewed.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Movers Hounslow will carry out risk assessments for our core activities, including domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading and unloading vehicles, handling bulky or fragile items, working in stairwells, lifts and confined spaces, and operating in busy streets or shared access areas. These risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever there is a significant change in work activities or conditions.
From these risk assessments we will develop and implement safe systems of work and method statements. These will cover, as appropriate, the use of lifting techniques and team carries, use of trolleys and moving equipment, securing loads in vehicles, use of ramps and tail lifts, safe driving practices and working in customers homes and premises with minimal disruption and risk.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key part of removals work and presents a significant risk of injury if not properly managed. Movers Hounslow will provide practical training in safe lifting and carrying, team handling and assessment of loads before movement. Staff must always assess the weight, shape and stability of items and use mechanical aids or additional manpower where necessary.
All moving and lifting equipment, such as sack trucks, dollies, straps, blankets, ramps and lifting platforms, will be maintained in good condition and checked regularly. Employees must use only equipment provided or approved by the company and must not improvise with unsuitable tools or makeshift solutions.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles will be maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition with regular inspections and servicing. Drivers must carry out basic pre use checks, report defects immediately and not drive any vehicle they believe to be unsafe.
Drivers must follow all road traffic laws, adhere to speed limits and drive defensively, taking into account load weight, road conditions and weather. Loads must be properly distributed and secured to prevent movement during transport. Drivers must not use handheld mobile phones while driving and must take adequate rest breaks to prevent fatigue, particularly on longer journeys.
Working at Customers Premises
When working at customers homes or business premises, our teams will take care to protect both people and property. This includes maintaining clear walkways, using floor protection where appropriate, avoiding trip hazards from equipment or packaging, and controlling access to work areas where necessary.
Our staff will cooperate with any site specific safety rules in place at customer premises, such as fire procedures, access controls or restricted areas. Where shared access areas such as corridors, staircases or loading bays are used, we will plan our work to minimise obstruction and risk to others.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Hounslow will provide appropriate health and safety training for employees and contractors, including induction training for new starters and refresher training as needed. Training may cover manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, emergency procedures and any specific risks identified in our assessments.
Information about hazards and safe working methods will be communicated clearly through briefings, written instructions and supervision on site. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that workers understand and follow the training and that additional support is provided where required.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly so that they can be recorded, investigated and, where necessary, acted upon to prevent recurrence. We will maintain an accident record and review incident data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Movers Hounslow will maintain suitable emergency procedures, including arrangements for first aid, fire safety and dealing with incidents such as vehicle breakdowns, spills or property damage. Staff will be informed of these procedures and must follow them at all times.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We recognise that our employees are a valuable source of practical knowledge about the risks associated with removals work. Movers Hounslow will consult with staff on health and safety matters and encourage suggestions for improving safety performance and working conditions.
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable and effective, taking into account changes in legislation, industry standards, working practices and feedback from employees and customers. Any revisions will be communicated to all relevant personnel so that we continue to deliver our services in a safe and responsible manner.
